Help – I Can’t Find Bottles for my Limoncello

April 5, 2008 at 3:27 pm (Other Drinks) (, , , , )

I’ve been searching everywhere and I haven’t been able to find appropriate bottles for storing my limoncello. The bottles in the liquor store are square with a screw cap and hold about 1/2 a liter. Of course I have the vodka bottles I used to make the liqueur, but they are not attractive and they are a bit too large to store in the freezer.

I’ve checked in the home stores (Linen & Things, etc), the dollar stores, Target, Pier 1, and on eBay. I live on the east coast, just outside Philadelphia. Ikea had some bottles with the flip lids like a Grolsch beer, but they are very difficult to open at room temperature, I can’t imagine what it would be like coming out of the freezer.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Check out this link. I like the corked bottles on the right.

This looked like a good option at first. I went to order some bottles today and the shipping was more than the cost of the bottles. They wanted $18 to ship twelve little glass bottles. I’m going to keep searching.

I’ve definitely been there. I’ve found some in places you wouldn’t expect. I’ve found both jars for infusion and bottles at Home Goods and I’ve found reasonably priced flip top bottles at a Crate & Barrel outlet store. You’d think they’d be too expensive there but they’re actually comparable, even before the crazy shipping charges you mentioned. Those online places only make sense if you order hundreds at once.

Update – There is an 89 cent store near work. They had red and white vine vinegar in bottles that look just like the one above. It holds about 1/3 of a liter, perfect as a gift or to fit in the freezer. These have a screw top, which I think it better than cork if you are putting it in the freezer.

Hey guys, I can only sugest internet searching for your bottles or do as I do and drink more wine and reuse those bottles. We actually store ours in the freezer in large wine bottles.Works better for us if we have several guests or just us when we’re really in the cello mood! Here is a link to a terrific lemoncello reciepe I found after my trip to Italy.Try it for sure with the everclear instead of vodka. It is much more authentic that way.Authentic Italian Limoncello

1 liter (1000 ml) of Everclear alcohol
    10 medium to large lemons
    1 1/2 liters of water (6 1/3 cups)
    3 pounds of sugar (6 1/2 cups)

Wash the lemons with a vegetable brush and hot water to remove any reside of pesticides or wax; pat the lemons dry. Using a potato peeler, take all the lemon rinds off of the lemons so there is no white pith on the peel. Place the rind-peelings in a large container with the Everclear alcohol. Cover the container and let it sit for seven days.
On the eight day, strain the the peels from alcohol; discard peels.

In a large saucepan, make a simple syrup by combining the water and sugar; let it simmer “fast” for 15 minutes. Let simple syrup cool to room temperature. Add to alcohol.

You are now finished and can drink it right away.

NOTE: This same recipe works for arancello also. Use 10 large oranges.

    Makes about 2 1/2 liters.

Michaels has 16 oz bottles that are $1.99. But you can purchase them 50 percent off when on sale. Great for gifts, but no cap. I purchase quality corks and am done. If I find a cap at home from another bottle that I don’t need that fits, I use it. I make Creme di Lemoncello. I use lemon rind (no zest), grain alcohol, milk instead of water and sugar. When the process is complete which takes anywhere from two weeks or more, I store bottles in freezer. I have kept rinds in alcohol for over a month and no problem. If am giving any as gifts, I use the 16 ounce bottles and either fill from larger bottles in freezer when gifting or if I have enough room in freezer fill bottles and store. Some put fresh vanilla in alcohol, but I have not. I save the rind after straining from alcohol and store in freezer. You can grind when using and put in cakes, little on ice cream or even shakes. I would love to find a way to do the same concoction, but with strawberry. Don’t think there would be enough flavor. Have had it made same way with orange and lime. Orange was good, not so much lime. Can always mix when you complete process on each one and experiment. I usually pour it over crushed ice. I am going to try to make some home made flavored liquors like my mother did. She had flavors like Galliano, Sambucca or Anisette and others. She purchased the flavors in an Italian grocery or pastry store. Going to research…..
